Meet Grafton Reed
Grafton Reed, Mechanic
Lewis Reed’s Rockville Garage started Sales and Service operations in 1915 with a handful of key employees. The original Rockville Garage, located at the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Rockville Pike, had a 15-car capacity as well as a single gas pump. Grafton Reed was a brother of Lewis Reed and a part of the dealership’s first work force. Grafton started working as a mechanic at the dealership in ca. 1918. According to his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card, 1917-1918, his occupation at the time was listed as Garage Manager, Rockville Garage.

Then & Now: Reed Brothers Dodge 80 Years Ago
Reed Brothers Dodge and the surrounding area sure has changed a lot in its almost century-long history. You might not realize how much things have changed until you look back and see what it looked like in the past. For this post, I have used one of Lewis Reed’s original photographs for “then” and a Google Maps street view image from today for “now”.

NOW: The color photograph below, is the dealership’s location today, now known as Veterans Park. In the 1970s the site was known as the Francis Scott Key Memorial Park, and later in 1988, it was permanently rededicated as Veterans Park. In the late 1960s, the state of Maryland acquired the land to widen 355 and donated the remaining sliver to the City. The state named the connector street behind the dealership’s location “Dodge Street” because Reed Brothers Dodge dealership was located there for more than 50 years.

Meet Phillip Reed
1916 – First Shop Force: Lewis Reed, (first name unknown) Long and Phillip Reed
Reed Brothers Dodge started Sales and Service operations in 1915 with a handful of key employees. Phillip Reed was a brother of Lewis Reed and a part of the dealership’s first work force. Phillip came to work for the dealership in 1916 as a mechanic until 1944. He was an original incorporator and charter member of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department when the fire company was organized on March 9, 1921.

Reed Brothers Dodge Featured in Montgomery Magazine: Reed Brothers was very proud and honored to be featured in the month of April/May 2017 Montgomery Magazine, historic landmarks “Then & Now” section. The black and white photograph is Reed Brothers Dodge located at its original location in Old Rockville at the triangle at Veirs Mill Road and Rockville Pike – close to 100 years ago – with “That Good Gulf” gasoline drive-through filling station and Dodge Brothers Motor Car and Graham Brothers Truck signage.

- Lewis Reed Photo in PBS Documentary: The Archival Producer for television’s most-watched history series, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE on PBS, found a photograph of the interior of a 1920’s trolley car taken by Lewis Reed and asked permission to use it in the documentary, “The Great War,” a six-hour, three-night event, that premiered Monday, April 10, through Wednesday, April 12, 9:00-11:00 p.m. ET in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into WWI.

Meet Lester Wilson, Reed Brothers First Service Manager
W. Lester Wilson, Reed Brothers Dodge First Service Manager 1921
Reed Brothers Dodge started Sales and Service operations in October 1915 with a handful of key employees. Lester Wilson was the dealership’s first Service Manager. W. Lester Wilson of Rockville, started employment in 1918 and stayed with Reed Brothers for 28 years.
